While Zenith made a name for itself with its high-frequency chronograph movements, the El Primero, the brand has grown far more than that in recent years. The Le Locle-based manufacturer has not only strengthened its expertise in chronographs (this watch is another proof) but also ventured into technology and contemporary design, notably the Defy collection. The Defy El Primero 21 is a bold and technical watch that comes in several brightly colored versions such as the Ultraviolet or the military-inspired Urban Jungle. Following last year's first high quality copy watches, Zenith's Defy Chroma II sub-collection consists of two limited-edition watches. At the time, the multicolor watch was only available in white ceramic, but the new version is actually two models, with a black version added. Admittedly, what we're focusing on here is a modernist and avant-garde design language. A step away from the vintage style of the Chronomaster or Pilot collections, and from the restrained elegance of the Elite collections. The Defy 21 chronograph is very modern, while the Chroma II is bold and loud.
Compared to the first version released last year, the technical basis remains unchanged. That means a large barrel-shaped case 44mm in diameter and 14.5mm high, topped by a round raised bezel. Its silhouette is characterized by two large rectangular pushers and an oversized crown, and the watch comes on a rubber strap with Cordura-effect inlays and (of course) iridescent stitching. The shape of the strap follows the lines of the case, giving it the ideal "integrated luxury sports watch" look. The main difference compared to the MK1 Chroma is that not only do you get a matte white ceramic version again, but you now also get brushed and polished black ceramic versions.
Color is the main difference compared to last year. The new model is different, though it still uses rainbow hues as its base. The black ceramic version comes in a range of shades based on primary colours, with yellow rubber inlaid on the crown, while the white ceramic version comes in brighter shades, emphasizing blue and pink, with blue rubber inlaid on the crown. This effect can be seen on the hour markers, hands and through the open dial that exposes the bridges of the movement. Powering the Zenith Defy 21 Chroma is the innovative in-house El Primero 9004 self-winding movement with double escapement and double barrel. The time escapement oscillates at a frequency of 5 Hz (36,000 vibrations per hour) and the chronograph escapement oscillates at a frequency of 50 Hz (360,000 vibrations per hour), the latter allowing precise timing to the 1/100th of a second. Two barrels provide a power reserve of 50 hours and continuous timing of up to 1 hour. It has 53 jewels and is TIME LAB chronometer certified. The rotor is shaped like a Zenith star and has a satin blue finish, and another part has a pink PVD coating. Functions include central hour, minute and 1/100th of a second chronograph seconds, 30-minute counter, 60-second counter, small seconds and power reserve indicator.
